Hotels love to market their amenities — “Jacuzzi suites,” “hot tubs,” “spa access.” But half the time you can’t tell whether it’s a private tub in your room or a lukewarm whirlpool by the communal ice machine, and that’s assuming they even used the right terms!

Why It’s So Confusing

Hotels just go with whatever word sounds best — if they’re looking for “fancy,” they might call a hot tub a “spa.” If they’re looking for big brand recognition, you’d better bet they’re calling a generic hot tub a “Jacuzzi.” The industry’s got standard terms… but hotels just aren’t using them. 

“Jacuzzi” is the biggest offender. The thing about Jacuzzis is that they’re not a product category — Jacuzzi is a specific brand! But they’re so popular thanks to their build quality and additional jets compared with other brands that they’re a victim of their own success. Just like “coke” doesn’t always mean Coca-Cola and a “Band-Aid” can be any sticking plaster, generic hot tubs are called “jacuzzis” by many… including hotels!

On Reddit alone, you’ll find threads like this one, with users crying out to actually find what they’re looking for. Filters that don’t work, big bathtubs called whirlpool tubs, “private” Jacuzzis that are anything but… or how to tell the difference between options.

Hot Tub

Let’s start with the humble hot tub. This is just an all-purpose, generic term for any heated tub. They can be indoor or outdoor, public or private. This is the category term for all hot tubs, including Jacuzzis. In the industry, a “hot tub” is a self-contained unit with its own water and heater.

Jacuzzi

Jacuzzi is a trademarked brand, not a category. Technically. It’s so popular it’s become a generic term, but the brand itself is known for higher build quality than competitors and more jets. Whirlpool tub

“Whirlpool tub” is a name that puts the mechanism front and center — it’s all about the swirling water effect. It’s used by manufacturers and hotels when they’re not using the Jacuzzi brand name. But it’s the same sort of thing as Jacuzzis and hot tubs.

Jetted tub

“Jetted tub” is the technically correct name for any tub with turbo jets, but it’s not a popular term. Hotels don’t use it often.

With a hot tub, Jacuzzi, jetted tub, a whirlpool tub… whatever it’s called, you’re getting the classic experience. Think bubbles, hot water, excitement. You’ll find them in different places — indoors, outdoors, private, public.

Soaking Tubs

A soaking tub is a deep tub designed for immersion, and it typically does not have jets. They’re specifically designed for immersion, so think more like a decadent bath.

Hotels sometimes refer to them as “spa tubs” or “luxury tubs” to create a luxurious, decadent ambiance… But they’re not the same kind of thing as a “spa” or “spa bath.”

They can feel like a bigger bathtub — disappointing if you were looking for a hot tub experience. With a soaking tub, you won’t get the bubbles or the excitement of a hot tub, but it can be a relaxing experience of its own. Soaking tubs are usually private. 

Spa Pool / Spa Bath

This one’s a little more complicated. Technically, in the industry, they’re separate from hot tubs because they’re not “self-contained” — you find them attached to pools. In hotels, all bets are off. They often won’t follow this industry definition!

A spa pool or bath is essentially a heated pool, which may or may not be equipped with jets. They’re usually built into the ground, placed outdoors, and often connected to the main swimming pool.

What About Spa?

A Spa is an umbrella term for any form of water therapy designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. This can include saunas, steam baths, or hot tubs.

When hotels talk about spa, they refer to a separate wellness area within the property that has one or more water therapy equipment. These facilities are typically shared public amenities designed to accommodate multiple guests at once. Spa often requires a prior appointment and a separate fee for use.

The Real Divide: Private vs. Shared

For many users, what’s important is that they get their luxurious soak — not whether it’s called a whirlpool tub, a Jacuzzi, or a generic hot tub. What’s really important when it comes to getting their soak on is whether they’ve got a private, in-room tub… or a shared facility. 

And that’s much harder to figure out than it should be. This Reddit thread pointed out the issue that sometimes, hotels will state they have hot tubs or Jacuzzis but don’t say whether it’s a public or private experience. Sometimes a facility will be listed as “private,” but will end up being overlooked by other guests!

Platforms like Tripadvisor are littered with reviews complaining that so-called “private” tubs are anything but. One woman complained that her so-called “private” tub was directly overlooked by the neighboring room!
